“The Tree of Life” is one of the most powerful paintings I’ve ever created — a true testament to resilience, praise, and the beauty that grows through time. It’s huge — 48x60 inches — and it pushed me way outside of my comfort zone in the best way.
I started by pouring and tilting my shimmering metallic paints intuitively, letting the colors flow and guide me like I usually do. But then I hit a wall — I couldn’t reach the center of the canvas without messing up the delicate design I had already laid down. So, I did what artists do best... I improvised.
I grabbed a yardstick and duct-taped a flat piece of plastic to the end to make my own custom swiping tool. I used it to pull the paint from the center outward — about a dozen sweeping motions from every side — forming the powerful upward motion of the tree’s trunk and swirling branches. That moment was magic.
Once the foundation was set, I went in with the back of my paintbrush and carved in swirling details by hand — big coils, tiny spirals, all dancing across the branches like praise in motion. I added neon bursts of color, glow-in-the-dark touches, and sparkly metallic pigments that light up under nightfall. It’s just as alive in the dark as it is in the light.
The thick trunk has this beautiful gentle curve to it — a little hunch — almost like someone who’s carried a lot on their back, but still stands tall with arms raised high. That’s what this piece means to me: no matter what you've walked through, you can still be rooted deep and reaching high — unbreakable and full of light.
